Shirley is a Canada-trained Counsellor and Couples Therapist with over 10 years of extensive experience in providing couples therapy, marriage counselling, and individual counselling. She has worked across a variety of settings including hospitals, university counselling centers, and community mental health centers in Toronto, Canada with individuals and couples with mental health distress and relationship issues.

Shirley believes that as humans we are wired for connection and emotional safety. She also believes that we all have the capacity for personal growth and change. She is passionate about helping individuals and couples experience the joy and satisfaction of a secure and deeply connected relationship. She has a special interest in supporting new moms and couples with young children and helping them reclaim their emotional connection and intimacy after having kids. Whether you are experiencing fertility challenges or postpartum depression/ anxiety or struggling with feeling unseen and disconnected in your relationship, Shirley is here to support you.

As someone in an intercultural marriage and a mother of two young children, Shirley has experienced the immense joy and challenges that come with parenthood. Her journey into motherhood has been profoundly humbling. She has experienced pregnancy losses and fertility challenges. This personal journey inspired her to become a perinatal specialist for new moms. Shirley has supported many new moms to process their feelings, beliefs and stressors related to postpartum and transition to motherhood, develop healthy self-care practice and support network, and to build more confidence and resilience as a new parent.

Shirley’s approach to therapy is primarily attachment-based and trauma-informed. She practices Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) – an evidence-based, experiential approach effective in working with individuals, couples, and families. Shirley supports couples with a wide range of relationship difficulties: communication breakdown, trust issues, healing from affairs/ infidelity, lack of intimacy, managing difficult family dynamics, navigating major life transitions and more. She helps couples identify and break negative patterns, communicate their feelings and needs in a healthy, productive way, and learn to respond, repair, and reconnect emotionally with one another. What sets her apart in her work with couples is that she also integrates the Gottman Method and key concepts and principles from sex therapy. Shirley’s approach not only helps couples resolve conflicts but also revitalizes their relationship.

Shirley’s style is warm, curious, and supportive. Shirley is committed to creating an empathic and non-judgemental environment in which you can explore your personal challenges and needs. She is mindful of the vulnerability that comes with pursuing therapy and strives to cultivate a strong therapeutic relationship that is built on trust, respect, and collaboration. Her clinical work is also informed by Anti-Oppressive and LGBTQ-Positive frameworks. She enjoys working with clients from diverse cultural and faith backgrounds, and with various sexual orientations.
