Family Therapy

Family relationships can be a source of support, but they can also become strained during periods of stress, conflict, or change. Adolescence is a period of significant emotional, social, and developmental change. It can also be a time when family relationships feel more complex. Family therapy offers a structured space to explore these difficulties together. At Central Minds, our Psychologists work with families to strengthen communication, improve understanding, and support healthier patterns of interaction.

What Is Family Therapy?

Family therapy is a form of psychological therapy that focuses on relationships within the family system. Rather than viewing the teenager or the caretakers as “the problem”, it considers how patterns of communication, roles, and expectations may contribute to ongoing difficulties.

Sessions may involve parents and children, siblings, couples, or extended family members, depending on the concerns and goals identified.

Family therapy can support families experiencing:

  • Ongoing conflict or communication breakdown
  • Parenting challenges
  • Adjusting to separation, remarriage, or blended family dynamics
  • The impact of mental health difficulties on the family
  • Major life transitions, such as relocation or bereavement

When Might Family Therapy Be Helpful for Teens and Parents?

Family therapy may be helpful when:

  • Conflicts between teenagers and caregivers feel frequent or unresolved
  • Communication has become strained, reactive, or avoidant
  • There are concerns about mood, anxiety, behaviour, or withdrawal
  • Caregivers feel uncertain about boundaries or consistency
  • Teenagers feel misunderstood or overly controlled
  • Trust within the family feels reduced

You may benefit from support if these patterns are affecting daily routines, school engagement, peer relationships, or the overall atmosphere at home.

What Can Contribute to Family Difficulties?

Family challenges rarely stem from a single cause. They often develop over time through a combination of factors.

Life Transitions

Changes such as divorce, new family members, adolescence, illness, or relocation can disrupt established roles and routines.

Communication Patterns

Misunderstandings, assumptions, or unspoken expectations can reinforce conflict. Over time, certain patterns may become entrenched.

External Pressures

Work stress, academic demands, financial concerns, or health issues can place additional strain on family relationships.

Understanding how these factors interact is an important part of family therapy.

How Family Therapy Works at Central Minds

Family therapy provides a neutral and structured environment where each member can express their perspective. Our Psychologists support families to:

  • Improve communication and active listening
  • Reduce cycles of escalation
  • Clarify roles and expectations
  • Develop consistent and developmentally appropriate boundaries
  • Strengthen collaborative problem-solving
  • Support teenagers’ independence while maintaining appropriate guidance

Therapy is tailored to the family’s specific circumstances and goals. In some cases, individual sessions may complement joint family sessions.

Therapeutic Approaches

Our Psychologists draw on evidence-based approaches, which may include:

  • Systemic therapy
Focuses on understanding how relationships and interaction patterns influence individual experiences.
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Supports families to identify unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours that contribute to conflict, and to develop more constructive responses.

Approaches are adapted to suit the developmental stage of adolescents involved.

FAQs About Family Therapy

Does family therapy mean teenagers or caregivers is at fault?

No. Family therapy does not focus on blame. It aims to understand patterns of interaction and how each person can contribute to positive change.

Do teenagers or caregivers have space to speak openly?

Yes. Sessions are structured to ensure that both teenagers and caregivers can express their perspectives. In some cases, individual sessions may complement joint sessions.

What if one family member does not want to attend?

It can still be helpful for other family members to meet with a Psychologist. Changes in one part of a system can influence the wider family dynamic.

How do we know if family therapy might help?

You may benefit from support if:

  • Conflicts feel repetitive and unresolved
  • Communication has become strained or avoidant
  • A family member’s mental health is affecting the household
  • Parenting approaches feel inconsistent or difficult to manage
  • Attempts to resolve issues independently have not led to improvement

Support can be helpful even if difficulties feel moderate rather than acute. Early intervention can reduce the likelihood of more entrenched patterns developing.
